Does the button on the extension cable open the charge port door? I pressed it but nothing happened. Is it defective?
The original Tesla handle has a built-in signal transmitter to pop the door open. An extension cord simply acts as a power pass-through and doesn't have this radio signal capability. Please use Tesla's native controls to open, unlock, or disconnect.
How to Open Your Charge Port When Using This Extension Cable
Since the extension cable acts only as a power conduit, you can easily open your charge port using any of these standard, reliable methods before plugging in:
• Via the Tesla App.
• Touchscreen.
• Tap to Open.
• Original Connector.
My original Tesla charger works fine—why does the extension cable sometimes fail to charge?
This happens due to Tesla's safety handshake protocol. An extension cord requires proper communication with the power source. If plugged into the car first, the connection times out and charging fails. ALWAYS plug extension cable into CHARGER FIRST.
What is the correct connection sequence in using an extension cable?
Always connect: Charger first → Vehicle second. Please use the following connection order:
Step 1.Connect the extension cable to the power source/charger.
Step 2.Give it 1-3 seconds to establish a connection.
Step 3.Connect the plug to your Tesla.
What is the gauge of this NACS extension cord?
This extension cord is constructed with conductors of 2 x 8 AWG, 1 x 10 AWG, and 2 x 18 AWG, utilizing TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) for both insulation and sheath material, with an overall outer diameter of 15.1 ± 0.5 mm.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON CHARGE PORT BUTTON: Since this is an extension cord without a built-in signal transmitter (just like any extension cable), the button on the handle will NOT automatically open the Tesla charge port door. To plug in, simply open the port using your Tesla App, the interior touchscreen, or by gently pressing the charge port door with your hand (ensure the car is unlocked) before connecting.
REQUIRED CONNECTION SEQUENCE: To ensure successful charging, ALWAYS connect the extension cable to your CHARGER FIRST. Wait 1-3 seconds for the system to initialize, then plug the other end into your vehicle. Plugging into the car first will disrupt the Tesla communication handshake and charging will fail.
